I have been entering photographic competitions for over 20 years in Australia and internationally, more consciously in the last 5 years. I have entered a variety of competitions with over 100 national acceptances, and 100 international acceptances: achieving merits, bronze, silver, and gold medals across my portfolio of landscapes, seascapes, underwater, and portraits.
So why do I go through the stress and doubt about selecting the right images, then eagerly awaiting to see my results, to see how they compare to the professional standard. I find that it is important to invest in myself. I find that competitions provide me with direction, pushing me out of my comfort zone, and focusing my mind. Encouraging me to develop my photographic capture practices, my image finishing in postproduction, and inspire my artistic interpretation/expression, and yes of course, gain recognition.
The greatest benefit has been the drive to push myself creatively, to be curious, experiment, and critically, be inspired by other photographers.
I am very proud of my growth these achievements. An exciting process of continually developing, evolving, and driving my passion.
